Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
- Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines the use of psychotherapy and hypnosis to help you make positive changes. It is a goal orientated therapy that focuses on the present and future rather than dwelling on any past issues or traumas.
- What happens in the Initial Consultation?
- During the initial consultation I will ask a few basic questions to establish what it is that you would like support with and what your best hopes are for your sessions. After gathering a few background details (such as address, phone number, symptoms etc), I will explain a little about how the brain works in relation to your symptoms and more importantly, what you can do to help you take back control. There is no obligation to go ahead with therapy sessions after having the initial consultation. It is a great opportunity to get to know me and find out more about the therapy.
- What happens during a typical session?
- A typical session combines forward thinking talking therapy (applying some CBT, NLP & SFBT techniques) to discuss your preferred future encouraging you to set small achievable goals. We will talk about your successes since the previous sessions and I will always be your biggest cheerleader.
- This is followed by trance (hypnosis). During trance your subconscious mind will process the information that has been discussed in the first part of the session, be open to positive suggestion and come up with solutions to your problems. Working together during sessions, I will explain things in a relatable way that is supported by the latest neuroscience research. I like my sessions to be fun and light-hearted, and many of my clients really look forward to our sessions together.
- Do I need to prepare anything before my session?
- It can be helpful to think about your preferred future and what you hope to achieve from the therapy, but this is not necessary as I can guide you through that thought process.
- Can you support children?
- Yes. I support children from age 5 upwards and hold an enhanced DBS check. Hypnotherapy can be very effective in helping children as they have such great imaginations! Sessions with children are very fun and interactive to help them feel at ease.
- How many sessions will I need?
- While some clients may see significant improvements in just a few sessions, others may benefit from a longer course of therapy. On average, most clients have between 6-12 sessions. However, the number of sessions varies dependent on the symptoms being addressed and your commitment to the process.
- Is this the right therapy for me?
- If you’re looking for a goal-oriented approach that helps to create positive change and solutions, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy may be a good fit. Results are dependent on your commitment; listening to the audio and keeping a daily positivity journal is key to the success of sessions.
- Is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy safe?
- Yes, it is a safe and effective approach to therapy. Hypnosis is simply a natural state of focused attention. During trance (hypnosis) you will hear some relaxing music in the background and listen to my voice. You may be listening intently, you may be drifting in/out of different thoughts like “what shall I wear tomorrow?” or “what route shall I run later?”, BUT your subconscious will be listening and processing the information that we have discussed during the session.
- Can you make me say or do things that I don’t want to?
- No, you will always be in control. Hypnosis is not about losing control but actually gaining it through focused attention and relaxation. You will be aware of everything and can bring yourself out of trance at any time should you wish.
- What if I can’t be hypnotised?
- Hypnosis is a natural state that everyone experiences daily, such as when driving a car, out for a run or deeply engrossed in a task. I will work with you to create a comfortable experience.
